Objective: To investigate the diagnostic value of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in the differential diagnosis of parotid gland masses.

Methods: The results of preoperative FNAB results and postoperative histopathological evaluation of 126 patients who were operated for the parotid gland mass between 2008-2018 were compared. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative predictive values of FNAB were calculated.

Results: FNAB results were malignant (19.8%) in 25 patients, benign in 72 patients (72.3%), inadequate material in 10 patients, and non-diagnostic (7.9%) in 10 patients. The final histopathological results were malignant (21.4%) in 27 patients and benign (78.6%) in 99 patients. Twenty-six (66.6%) of 27 patients with histopathologically diagnosed as malignant were reported to have malignancy. In 99 (87.8%) of 99 patients with histopathologically diagnosed as benign, FNAB was reported as benign. When the FNAB results of 126 patients were considered in total, the result of 87 were true negative, 4 result as false negative, 18 result as true positive, 7 result as false positive. The sensitivity for FNAB was 81%, specificity was 92.5% and accuracy was 83.3%. The positive predictive value was 72% and the negative predictive value was 95.6%.

Conclusion: FNAB is an effective and safe diagnostic method for the preoperative diagnosis of parotid gland masses. Keywords : Fine needle aspiration biopsy, histopathology, parotid gland
